The 11th Expert Forum for Farm Animal Well-Being was held in Sydney (Australia) from the 30th of May to the 1st of June. The forum was organized by Boehringer Ingelheim one of the worlds 20 leading pharmaceutical companies. More the 100 experts from academic institutions and companies from Australasia such as University of Melbourne, University of Technology in New Zealand, Meat and Livestock Australia gathered to share knowledge and information regarding farm animal welfare. Prof. Sara Platto presented a speech on the “Current situation of Animal Welfare in Asia” where she outlined the major issues on applying animal welfare across borders (in countries with different cultures and living habits). Prof. Platto gave a detailed overview about the different levels of implementation of animal welfare standards and legislations across the Asian countries (China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, India, South Korea, Japan) with particular focus on China. Even though the regulations and husbandry standards adopted by Asian countries in the matter of animal welfare might seem scattered throughout the vast number of issues that still need to be addressed, Prof. Platto underlined the fact that the local governaments and farms are slowly preparing themselves to enter the international meat market - not just as leading producers - but now as major exporters.
